Matchroom Boxing’s, Eddie Hearn appears more than willing to reach into his newly found deep pockets to bring fans a super-fight.
On May 10th of this year, Hearn sent shockwaves around the boxing world by announcing a partnership with fledgeling streaming service DAZN. The deal, which I’m sure you all know by now. Promises sixteen US cards as well as the twenty-four cards Hearn produces back in the United Kingdom. It also promises £1bn over eight years (two years guaranteed).
However, it is fair to say that Hearn has struggled to land a marquee name thus far. Despite being linked to pretty much every free-agent in the sport. There is one name, however, who remains linked with the DAZN platform. One name, that Hearn salivates over the prospect of matchmaking.
The IBF world lightweight championship had barely been drapped over Mikey Garcia’s shoulder. Adding to his WBC crown. But Garcia wasn’t willing to rest on his laurels. To bask in his glory. Oh, no Ladies and Gentleman. Mikey Garcia didn’t take long to desire to dare to be great again. There was one name on the four-weight world champion’s lips. That name was ‘The Truth’ Errol Spence Jr.
So is a fight likely?
Well, if you ask most boxing fans which fight they’d like to see at 147-pounds, it isn’t Garcia/Spence. It’s Spence/Crawford. That being said it’s a fight that provides intrigue. One certainly can’t fault Garcia for his intestinal fortitude in wanting to step into the ring with a man that’s huge at the weight.
Can Hearn pull it off?
In an interview with ThaBoxingVoice Hearn was quick to point out that neither fighter has to be contracted to him to put on the fight. Hearn was quick to question how well the fight would sell on PPV. Taking aim at Showtime’s lack of funds, and ability to offer a guarantee to either man to put on the fight. This year at least. When prompted Hearn said it was a possibility that he could open his chequebook and offer $8m EACH.
The talk of the town is for Crawford vs Spence to marinate. But Hearn would like to see Garcia take on one or two more challenges. Sounding out his charge, Jesse Vargas and even Golden Boy’s Jorge Linares as fights he would like to see first.
They say money talks, and boy does Eddie Hearn has a lot of it. He is one of, if not the sharpest businessman in the sport. If anyone can put this fight on, Hearn can. He’s treading on many, many toes (mostly Stephen Espinoza’s at Showtime) … and he loves it.
One final thing ….
Should Mikey Garcia not want the fight right now. Then Danny ‘Swift’ Garcia would happily take Eddie Hearn’s call for the princely sum of … 10 million dollars.
